Washakie County School District #1 Board Meeting Recap

Washakie County School Board District #1 was in regular session on Monday night, June 27 in the Central Office. A lot of kids from the Elementary Schools, the Worland Middle School and Worland High School were recognized for earning perfect attendance during the 2015-16 school year, Saydria Russell, Emily Keller, Haley Schneider, Casey Wassum and Hannah Ozmon were honored for taking 3A All-State in Girls High School Soccer, Braedon Page, Kyle Lamb, Jacob Lamm and Jakob Schaeffer were recognized for taking 3A All-State in Boys High School Soccer, while the Board also gave kudos to Discus thrower Bryanna Mickelson and 200 meter sprinter Emmy Dykman for picking up 3A All-State in High School Track along with Hoyt Nicholas for becoming a 3A State Champion in Track for throwing the Discus. In new business, the Board approved Brian Gunderson as the new Assistant Principal at Worland High School. Gunderson will be moving to Worland from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Superintendent David Nicholas said that at least half a dozen people were interviewed for this position. The Board passed 4 to 3 that Amber Bennett be the new Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher. Bennett has been a paraeducator in the District for the last two years. Middle School Principal Ryan Clark stated that only 2 people applied for this position and added that Bennett will be on a 3-year exemption until she is fully certified. Board member Anna Venable mentioned that getting a similar position such as this filled should be looked at more carefully, while Board member Terri Logan said that she’s becoming very leary that the Board is hiring people who are not fully certified for an open position. Ben Hofmann and Cody Smith were approved to be Assistant Football Coaches at Worland High School for the upcoming 2016 season pending PTSB certification, Mike Blissett was approved to be the new Girls Head Swimming & Diving Coach at Worland High School along Brianna Shefferly and Danielle Warren as the Assistant Coaches, Wade Wyman was approved to be the new 9th grade Boys Head Basketball Coach and Jonah Baker was approved to be the 8th grade Boys Head Basketball Coach, Rob Woffinden was approved as the new Middle School Head Cross Country Coach along with Michael Montgomery as the new Middle School Head Wrestling Coach, while all of the Spring sports Coaches were approved by the Board for 2017 as presented. The Board also approved the 2016-17 Consolidated Grant along with the Title II-A Grant for class size reduction of teachers and the Board approved WHSAA activity enrollment and catastrophic/liability insurance for the District. The Board also approved an early graduation request for WHS student Stacie Adams at the end of the summer school session based upon completion of all graduation requirements. WHS Principal Kevin Smith said that she will fulfill her requirements at the end of this year’s summer school session.
