At 5:08 a.m. Thursday morning emergency responders in Campbell County were dispatched to mile marker 84 on South Douglas Highway/HWY 59. Wyoming Highway Patrol officials say a head-on collision occurred.

Officials say Kaycee Smelser (31) was approaching the end of a shared passing lane and lost control of her vehicle before entering the northbound lane and impacting a vehicle driven by Jessica Cano De Najera (26).

Cano De Najera was transported to Campbell County Memorial Hospital, but died a few hours later.

Wyoming Highway Patrol officials say Smelser, suffered significant injuries and was life-flighted.

Officials have been in contact with the Campbell County Attorney’s Office and are in discussion about possible charges.

The WHP urges drivers to drive cautiously and defensively , even on warmer days.

At the time of yesterday’s crash, strong winds and blowing snow created slick and dangerous road conditions in some areas.

Highway Patrol is investigating if road conditions were a factor in the crash, and also examining factors like driving too fast for conditions, lane use, and speed of the vehicles.

Further details are expected at a later time.
