NE Wyoming Highway Patrol Dispatchers Assist In Multi-State Pursuit

Sundance – The Wyoming Highway Patrol’s Communications Center assisted in the apprehension of two subjects who were involved in a high-speed chase on the evening of Wednesday March 19.

The pursuit which originated in Wyoming by a Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper was terminated by South Dakota Highway Patrol Troopers in their State at mile post #12 on eastbound Interstate 90.  The two individuals in the Chevrolet Cavalier are in custody in South Dakota facing traffic and misdemeanor drug possession charges in that State.

Wyoming Troopers have also cited both occupants of the vehicle on numerous traffic charges to include eluding, driving while under suspension, reckless driving and interference with a peace officer.

The incident began when a Trooper made a traffic stop on an eastbound Florida registered vehicle at the Pine Ridge Interchange on I-90 twenty miles west of Sundance.  The Trooper issued a written warning to the driver, 35 year-old January Carter from Lakeland, Florida, however, as the Trooper attempted to explain the warning Carter rolled up the window on her vehicle and drove off.

As the pursuit took several turns, at one time heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Interstate, Wyoming Highway Patrol dispatchers were in contact with the Crook County Sheriff's Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Captain Troy Mclees praised dispatchers stating, "Through their diligence and teamwork, they were able to quickly alert other law enforcement agencies of the situation, including the South Dakota Highway Patrol who ultimately stopped the vehicle. Numerous phone calls were made, and location and speed updates as well as other important details were constantly relayed throughout. Timely notifications were paramount, as at one point during the incident the suspect vehicle turned around and was headed westbound in the eastbound lane."

After crossing the Wyoming/South Dakota State line, Troopers from the South Dakota Highway Patrol became the primary agency in the pursuit with the Wyoming Trooper following some distance behind.  Just after crossing the State Line Carter avoided stop sticks placed across both eastbound lanes of the Interstate by South Dakota Troopers. She eventually stopped her vehicle at mile post #12 where her and her passenger were taken into custody without further incident.

The passenger in the vehicle, 25 year-old Seth Tomlinson also from Lakeland, Florida, was cited by Wyoming Troopers for driving while under suspension and interference with a peace officer and arrested by South Dakota Troopers for possession of drug paraphernalia.

During emergencies such as this the radio dispatchers are the officers sole link to other officers and assistance.
