Roughriders are state champs!

GILLETTE, Wyo.-- The Gillette Roughriders are the Wyoming AA American Legion champions for the first time since the 2008 season. The Riders downed the Casper Oilers 6-1 on Saturday night to earn a trip to the Northwest Regional tournament in Eugene, Oregon.

Tanner Rogen pitched a complete game and finished with nine strikeouts. He allowed only five hits in the game. He was also named the tournament's most valuable player.

Gillette scored three runs in the first inning, one in the third and two in the sixth inning.

The Riders only had trouble in the tournament in their first game against Sheridan, The Troopers forced Gillette to earn an 11-10 win to move to the second round. Gillette faced Casper in the second game, winning 4-2 on Friday. Casper defeated Cheyenne Post 6 to earn a spot in the championship game against the Riders.

In the championship game, Gillette had 8 hits. The Oilers committed a few errors early in the game that Gillette used to it's advantage. Lucas Rissler went 3-4 with a walk. He had a single in the first inning that drove in two of the Riders six runs.
