The day after police received a call regarding a false kidnapping report, they had to deal with a legitimate kidnapping call yesterday afternoon.  At 3:20 pm yesterday a 53-year old man contacted the Gillette Police Department to report his son had been kidnapped.

The man said his son, 24 year old Jose Rosasio Orozco Castaneda from Gillette, had been kidnapped by a "Mexican smuggler.”  It is believed he is being held for ransom in either Phoenix, AZ or Houston, TX.  The man’s family already sent $1,500 in ransom money to the kidnappers, but more was requested.

Corporal Eric Deercorn with the Gillette Police Department said the man was visiting Mexico at the time and that the case was being treated as legitimate.

Deercorn added Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said this type of thing is "quite frequent" with young people from the United States visiting Mexico.

The case has been turned over to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They have been contacted by the Basin Radio Network for more information.

Although the identity of the kidnappers is not known at this time, there is a possibility they are connected with a Mexican drug cartel.  Explaining the relationship between Mexican drug cartels and incidents of kidnapping, Deercorn said, “It’s very frequent down there that that’s what happens.”

In a statement released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, no further information will be released at this time in order to avoid negatively impacting the investigation.

There is no relation between this story and the false kidnapping call reported on Thursday December 3.
