CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A newspaper poll says Wyoming Republicans Rita Meyer and Matt Mead are their party's leading gubernatorial candidates ahead of the Aug. 17 primary election.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports Friday that 27 percent of 400 voters surveyed said they would vote for Meyer, who is state auditor, while 24 percent said they would vote for Mead, a former U.S. attorney for Wyoming. The difference between them is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.

House Speaker Colin Simpson polled 17 percent. Former state Department of Agriculture Director Ron Micheli was the choice of 12 percent.

The poll was conducted July 26-28 by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.
