Gillette man charged with attempted murder in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A Gillette, Wyoming man who was shot by law officers following a vehicle chase in the Rapid City area has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and six other felonies stemming from the alleged incident.


Authorities allege that 42-year-old James Baker, of Gillette, Wyoming fled from a traffic stop early in the morning January 10th and led officers on a chase before emerging from his vehicle and firing his 9 mm semiautomatic handgun at officers. The officers returned fire and shot Baker at least twice, in the upper torso and hand.


Pennington County Deputy State's Attorney Lara Roetzel says charges were brought Thursday against Baker, formerly of Box Elder, South Dakota.
