The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports of a telephone scam in which an individual claiming to be a U.S. court employee tells the person on the other end of the line that an arrest warrant has been issued because they failed to appear for jury duty.
Then, the caller claims to need personal information to verify the victim’s identity, including a date of birth, Social Security number, and even credit card numbers.
Law enforcement warns that these calls are made in an attempt to defraud you and steal your identity. The judicial system does not contact people by telephone and ask for personal information.
Authorities urge anyone who receives one of these calls not to give out any personal or confidential information. Rather, you should immediately hang up the phone.
If you have already been contacted and have already given out your personal information, closely monitor your financial accounts and credit reports and contact your local FBI Field Office. In Wyoming, victims should call the field office located in Denver by calling (303) 629-7171. More information on the FBI can be found online at www.fbi.gov.
