The Wyoming High State Football Championships kickoff Friday in Laramie from War Memorial Stadium with five games being played over the two days to decide who will be this year’s champions!
The first game of the weekend will be in 2A where the undefeated and No. 1 ranked Lovell Bulldogs face off against the 9-1 Lyman Eagles. Lovell took down Lyman in week 3 of the regular season 21-7. Lyman is looking for their first title since 1999. Lovell is looking for their second ever title. Their only other one was in 1987.
Friday’s second and final game of the day is in 3A where upstart Powell takes on 3-time defending state Champion Douglas. These two teams met in the 2006 4A State Title game with the Panthers taking down the Bearcats 37-25 in Douglas. The last time these two teams met in the playoffs was in the 2008 4A State Semifinals with Douglas coming out on top 28-27 as the Bearcats would go on to win their first of three consecutive state championships.
Saturday’s state title tilts start off in 6-man football with defending state champion Snake River battling Dubois at 10am, the Rattlers beat the Rams back in week two, 66-24.
Then in the 1A State Title game No. 1 Southeast battles Cokeville at 1pm. The Panthers are the defending 1A Champions, but the Rattlers won the previous four titles in a row.
In the final championship game of the weekend, the Sheridan Broncs take on Cheyenne East at 4pm. The Broncs easily took care of the T-Birds in the regular season 44-14 in Cheyenne to close out the regular season. Sheridan comes in as heavy favorites, but the T-Birds are flying high after their upset win over defending state Champion Natrona County last week 24-19 to shock the Mustangs and end their chance at an undefeated season.
The Broncs are playing in their third consecutive state title game, and they’ll be looking for their first title since 2009 when they took down Cheyenne Central 40-15.
The East Thunderbirds are appearing in their first state title game since 2007 when they beat Evanston 24-14.
