When your leading scorer is benched three minutes into the game due to committing two fouls, one could come to the conclusion that it was an ugly night for the Pronghorn Women (12-8, 5-2). Instead, it opened up plenty of opportunities for the Gillette College squad to validate they can work as a team to get the win. They did just that, defeating the Trapper Women (10-10, 2-5), 78-68.
Iesha Greer, who led Gillette with 14.1 points a game coming into Wednesday night's contest, was called for two fouls early and sat on the bench most of the first half. Freshman Alex Ward stepped up to lead the Pronghorns in the first half to head into the locker room with a 37-32 lead.
In the second half, Northwest College was eventually able to tie it up at 54, but never took the lead as Elisha Hensey's strong performance from the charity stripe. She went 10 for 12 in the game, but was also the player with the ball down the wire as the Trapper Women strategically fouled her multiple times as time was running out, Of her 10 free throws made in the game, seven came within the last minutes of the game.
Ward, Anastasia Champlin, Jordyn Croft, Kim Caywood and Diarra Carrington all finished with twice as many points as their per-game averages on the scoreboard. That teamwork is what gave Gillette College the win, even though two Trapper Women finished with the game high of 18 points apiece.
Jordan Scott-Benson did not play due to an injury. Head Coach Will Rider is hoping she will be able to go against Sheridan on Saturday, as the Pronghorns travel north for their next game.
