After thirteen performances of amazing rodeo action, new champions were crowned at the 63rd Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) on Saturday, July 23 in Gillette, Wyoming. A total of 1,461 students from the United States, Canada, and Australia competed in this year’s NHSFR.

After the 10th performance of the National High School Finals Rodeo this morning at Cam-plex, Ace Thurston from Lance Creek jumped into the top 10 of the overall standings with his top run of 75 today. Rozet’s Emily Faber had the 3rd fastest time in Goat Tying at 9.24 seconds while Hayden Segelke from Snyder, CO had the top time of 8.29 seconds.

After the 9th performance of the National High School Finals Rodeo last night at Cam-plex McKale Hadley of Plain City, UT jumped to the top of the overall standings in Barrel Racing with her time of 17.123 seconds, which was tops for the performance as well. Rozet’s Emily Faber finished the night with the 12th best time at 17.959 seconds.

Gillette’s Cassidy Kruse made a statement last night in the 1st performance of the 2nd Go at Cam-plex. Kruse shot out of the gates with the top time of 17.263 seconds in Barrel Racing, which helped her jump all the way up to #2 in the overall standings and she is just five one-thousandths of a second behind overall leader Callahan Crossley of Hermiston, OR.

The final performance of the 1st Go Round wrapped up this morning at Cam-plex, and Richmond Champion from The Woodlands, TX is on the way to living up to his name as he scored a 76 in Bareback Riding, which puts him in a tie with Blaine Kaufman from Pretty Prairie, KS atop the overall standings heading into the 2nd Go tonight.

Colton Miller from Lance Creek really shined last night in Saddle Bronc in the 5th performance of the 1st Go Round as he scored an 84 to take over the top spot in the overall standings and Ryan Ellenson of Gillette finished in the top 5 with a score of 50. Gillette’s J.W. Thrush came away with the best time last night (10.29) in Tie-Down Roping and he sits in 5th place in the overall standings.

The 4th performance of 1st Go Round wrapped up this morning at Cam-plex and Mattie Hepp from Gillette’s time of 20.839 seconds in Pole Bending was good enough for the 5th best run and she currently sits in 10th place in the overall standings. Macy Fuller from Clarkston, WA had the best time this morning with a run of 20.393 seconds. Another Wyoming cowgirl to score this morning was Ten Sleep’s Rachel Taylor who finished in 24th.

They’ve now completed 3 performances in the 1st Go Round after last night’s efforts and 6 cowboys and cowgirls from last night performed well enough to not only be the top finishers last night, but to also grab a hold of the top spot in the overall standings.

The 2011 National High School Finals Rodeo got underway Sunday night at Morningside Park at Cam-plex in Gillette, WY and Rozet’s Emily Faber, who is competing in three events this week, shot out of the gates with a top 10 finish in the 1st performance of Breakaway Roping with a time of 4.29.
