WASHINGTON (AP) - A report by U.S. House Democrats says Wyoming accounts for more than 800 of the 2,000 citations issued over a 13-year period to companies for safety and drilling violations on public lands in 17 states.
The report says federal policing of oil and natural gas drilling on public lands is lax and inconsistent. Only 6 percent of the 2,000 violations resulted in monetary fines - to about $274,000, from 64 companies.
According to the report, in eight drilling states, federal regulators issued no fines between February 1998 and February 2011. More than $120,000 in fines was issued in Wyoming.
The report comes from the Democratic staff of the House Natural Resources Committee.
