At the Tuesday, December 3rd City Council meeting, John Opseth was sworn in as Mayor of Gillette, taking over the seat vacated by Mayor Tom Murphy. Mayor Opseth is the 38th Mayor in Gillette's history, and he will serve out Mayor Murphy's term through 2014.
Opseth has been serving as a City Councilman since being appointed to the City Council in January, 2009 to serve out the late Steve Hughes's term as Ward 2 Councilman when the former Councilman was elected to serve on the County Commission in 2008. In 2010, Opseth ran for re-election to his Ward 2 seat and was re-elected. Prior to his appointment to the City Council, Opseth served on the City of Gillette's Planning Commission.
Also at tonight's meeting, the City Council appointed Councilwoman Louise Carter-King to serve as Council President through 2014.
With Mayor Opseth now in place it leaves an open seat in Ward 2. The City is now accepting applications for the Ward 2 seat vacated when Mayor Opseth was sworn in.

Applications must be received in City Administration by Friday, December 20th at 4 p.m.
Potential Ward 2 candidates will be interviewed on Monday, December 30th. Candidates must interview in person to be considered for the appointment.
The City Council will appoint the Ward 2 City Council member at the Tuesday, January 7th, City Council meeting, and the new appointee will immediately being serving their term - which will expire at the end of 2014.
