CCSD Approached About Land for Fire Station

At last night's Campbell County School Board Meeting, Superintendent for Instructional Support Dr. Alex Ayers, spoke the school trustees about a letter received from Campbell County Commissioner Chairman Mickey Shober.  The topic was about approximately 38 acres of land owned by the school district at the intersection of Southern Drive and Enzi Drive and if about 2 acres of that property could be used to build a new replacement satellite fire station.

“We received a letter from Shober asking for the district’s consideration of leasing up to two acres for a possible fire station on that future high school site.” - Ayers

Ayers also went over a few of the details to consider with that request which included easements and the effect of a drainage ditch in the area.

“The City of Gillette has a plan with their detention areas and with a ditch going through that property we need to make sure that we fully understand the city’s intention and needs in that area as that property is developed in the future.”- Ayers

Ayers also noted that he has been in contact with the State School Facilities Department to make sure any concerns they may have can be addressed.

“That property was purchased several years ago for over three million dollars for a future secondary site and the state paid for that. Since they paid for that, they obviously have a vested interest in that property and we would need to work with them on any potential agreement.” – Ayers

Ayers did add however that the SFD staff did not indicate that they would not be open to the possibility.  The board directed Ayers to continue looking into the issue, saying they were happy to work on trying to find a way to help out all the entities involved with the request.
