Sheridan ¾ Fall 2012 turkey season in wild turkey Hunt Area 3 (Sheridan, Johnson, and Campbell counties) is open Oct. 1 – Dec. 31. Hunters should note that old Hunt Areas 5 and 7 were combined with Hunt Area 3 for the 2012 fall hunting season. The turkey season for Hunt Area 1 in Crook County and northern Weston County is open Nov. 1 - 30.
General licenses can be used anywhere a general turkey license is valid including areas 1 and 3. There are 218 limited quota Hunt Area 3, type 3, fall turkey licenses available for those seeking an opportunity to harvest an additional turkey.
Most turkey hunting in Hunt Area 3 is found on private land, so hunters are reminded to obtain access permission from landowners. There are some limited opportunities for hunters to help address a turkey damage situation near Sheridan. Call the Sheridan Regional Office (307-672-7418) for more information. Wild Turkey Hunt Area 1 includes the Black Hills area near Sundance, where more public land is available to hunters.
Turkey hunting presents a special opportunity to introduce first-time hunters to the sport. Turkeys can often be found near creek and river drainages. Young people must have a hunter safety card or have a hunter mentor with them (with the proper mentor permit). All turkey hunters must possess a conservation stamp and a turkey license while turkey hunting.
