The Gillette Camel girls and boys basketball teams both jumped out to big first quarter leads and rolled to resounding season opening wins over Green River.
The Lady Camels won 77-40, after holding a 23-6 lead after one quarter of play. Four starters scored in double figures, led by Haley Urbatsch, who scored 12 of her game high 15 points in the second half. Julia Seamans had twelve points, and Jessie Geer and Abby Moerkerke each chipped in eleven.
The Camel boys, meanwhile, held a 25-4 advantage after one quarter of play, and only added to it, as they beat the Wolves, 85-25. Cody Kelley led all scorers with 20 points, Darian Long had eleven, and Eli Voigt scored ten. Cale Miessler added nine for Gillette, and three players scored eight points: Garrett Schempp, Tanner Rogen, and Beau Nutting.
Gillette hosts the Camel Tournament, starting Thursday. Both teams will face Century High School, from Bismarck, ND. The Girls game tips off at 6 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow. Both games can be heard on 97.3 Camel FM and basinsradio.com with coverage starting at 5:45.
