The Gillette Camel Boys and Girls Basketball Teams both went 3-0, over the weekend, at the Flaming Gorge Invite in Green River.
On Thursday, the Lady Camels trounced Union, from Roosevelt, Utah, 55-11. Gillette led 23-3, at the end of the first quarter, and 42-2 at the half. Three players scored in double figures, for the Lady Camels, as they got 12 points from Julia Seamans, and ten points apiece from Taylor Deaton and Elissa Howard.
The Gillette Boys also won big over Union, Thursday, 92-71. Cody Kelley scored more than 30 points, for the second straight game, as he led the Camels with 31. He also became Gillette’s all-time assist leader in the win over the Cougars.
On Friday, the Lady Camels overwhelmed Riverton with swarming full-court defense, and beat the Lady Wolverines, 78-49. Deaton led the Lady Camels with 13 points. Jessie Geer chipped in ten, as eleven players scored for Gillette.
The Gillette Boys team knocked off Riverton, 73-67, behind 26 points from Cody Kelley. The Camels also got big scoring contributions from Darian Long, who scored 23, and Cale Miessler who had 19. Miessler delivered the play of the game, in the final minute, as he intercepted a Wolverine pass, along the perimeter, and raced in for a lay up. He was fouled, and made the free throw, to turn a four point Camel lead into a seven point advantage, and Gillette never looked back.
They got right back at it, Saturday morning, with a 67-59 win over Evanston. The game was tied in the fourth period, but Gillette got key three-point baskets from Andrew Hays, Eli Voigt, and Tanner Rogen, who also knocked down a clutch two-point shot. Kelley scored eight of his team high 22 points in the final quarter, when he went 8-for-8 from the foul line.
The Lady Camels then got 15 points from Taylor Deaton and ten from Shelby Johnson, on their way to a 54-32 win over the Lady Red Devils. They improved to 5-2; the Camel boys are now 6-1.
Both teams will resume their seasons on January 2nd, when the Camels tip-off the Energy Classic at Campbell County High School.
