The Gillette Lady Camels (18-6) were unable to hold onto an early lead against Sheridan (22-2) in the 4A East Regional Title Game on Saturday as the Lady Broncs prevailed 54-38 at the Castle of Chaos.
It took just over 4 minutes in the 1st quarter for the Lady Camels to get on the board, but then they went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-1 lead with just over 2 minutes remaining in the quarter. However the Lady Broncs answered right back as they went on an 18-6 run late in the 1st and into the 2nd quarter to grab a lead they never gave up.
Missed free throws and turnovers were Gillette’s Achilles heel in their 2nd loss this season to Sheridan. The Lady Camels turned the ball over 23 times after coming into the game averaging just 15.4 per game. The from the charity stripe Gillette attempted 28, but made just 11 (39.3%). Meanwhile Sheridan turned the ball over just 14 times and made 23 of their 31 free throws (74.1%).
Sierra Toms led all Lady Camels in scoring with 13 points while Dani Williams chipped in 9. McCorra Ford had 7 points, Birdgit Cargal and Shelby Johnson each had 3 while Whitney George and Steph Casteel each had 2.
Sheridan was led by Mali Wright’s 18 points, which was 1 shy of career high. Robbie Ryan scored 11 while Hailey Ligocki, Taylor Townsend and Emily Julian each had 7 and Baylee Baker and Maddy McClure both contributed 2 points.
With the loss that means the Lady Camels will be the #2 seed from the East at the 4A State Tournament, which begins on Thursday, March 7th in Casper when Gillette will take on Evanston in a rematch of the 2012 3rd place game, which the Lady Camels won.
