GILLETTE, Wyo.--The (#11) Pronghorn men (25-3, 14-1) and Casper College Thunderbirds usually always play close games in Gillette's five-year history. Friday night's game at the South Campus was no different. The Pronghorns held off the T-birds three-point threat in the second half and come away with a 108-100 victory.
In the first half, the Pronghorns shot 46 percent from the floor and went nine for 12 from the charity stripe to take a 49-37 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Casper College closed the gap fast. The T-birds were able to sink three-pointer after three-pointer, the same thing they did in the game in Casper earlier in the season. However, Gillette College kept its composure and took advantage of shots down low.
Lorenzo Bonham helped drive it to the basket in the second half, scoring all 10 of his points in the period. Dwight Anderson led the team at the line in the second half. Anderson went 12 for 14 from the free throw line.
Three of those free throws were off an intentional and technical foul on Garrett Swanson of Casper. He had to be held back by his team mates and even got into the face of a Pronghorn fan in the stands. Swanson fouled out of the game at that point, but was not ejected.
With Gillette College up and 90 seconds left, Renard Suggs helped seal the deal for the Pronghorns with a right corner triple-one of only three in the half for the home team.
Renard's brother, Rickey, led Gillette College with 20 points and was a key player for rebounds. Rickey finished with 11 rebounds and did so coming off the bench. Five other players finished with double digits. Steven Daho-Mundzo also had a double-double.
Gillette College will finish the regular season on the road against Little Big Horn College Saturday night.
With the win against Casper college on Friday, a victory against Little Big Horn will be huge. If the Pronghorns get a victory Saturday, it will give them a shot to move into the top ten in the National Junior College Athletic Association Standings. With a top ten ranking, a team has a better shot of getting an at-large bid to the NJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. This will help Gillette College even if they don't end up winning the Region IX tournament.
