Gillette, Wyo.-- Head Coach Shawn Neary of the Gillette College Pronghorns was the coach for Miles Community College before coming to Gillette to start up the basketball program here. Twice a year, he gets to coach the Pronghorns against his former team. Gillette College was able to sweep the regular season series against the Pioneers Wednesday night with a 76-64 victory.
Other than a couple lead changes in the first couple minutes of the match, Gillette College led throughout. Miles Community College turned the ball over eight times in the first half. Gillette College only did it once. Miles made more three-pointers than the Pronghorns, but the overall field goal percentage was in favor of Gillette College.
It was one of the cleanest first half of college basketball, with only 6 fouls being called between the two squads. Gillette College went one for two from the line and Miles went two for four from the charity stripe. Not a single timeout was called by either team as well in the first stanza.
Gillette College led 39-29 after the first half.
The Pioneers kicked off the second half with a small 4-0 run. That prompted Neary to call an early timeout at just under two minutes into the half. Whatever he told his Pronghorns in that timeout seemed to work, as Gillette College started putting points up on the board soon after.
In the first meeting between the two teams in Miles City, Tiron Brown scored 32 points in a losing effort for the Pioneers. Still, Neary emphasized that couldn't happen in Wednesday night's game at the South Campus. The Pronghorns responded, holding Brown to one point in the contest.
Andre Marquez and Myles Henry led all players with 17 points apiece. Aleksandar Ivkovic led Miles with 16 points.
The Pronghorns host Western Wyoming Community College Saturday night at 5:00pm at the South Campus.
