GILLETTE, Wyo.--The Gillette College women's basketball team has another new addition to the group. Lauren Davis, a transfer from Trinidad State (Colo.) signed to play for Gillette on Tuesday afternoon.
Davis is a 5'10 small forward from Loveland, Colo. Her parents moved to Gillette last November and she followed in May. She wanted to be close to her family, but still play basketball.
Lauren was able to see the Pronghorns play in the Region IX tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb. last season and came to Head Coach Will Rider with the interest in playing for Gillette this season.
Rider followed up by giving her a workout session and liked what he saw.
“She's an athletic, tall shooting gal. She's competitive, she works hard and like I said, she's got a full year playing experience at Trinidad. So we're excited about bringing that type of experience back to our program this year,” Rider stated.
From watching video of Trinidad, Rider said that the style of play between Davis' former team and the Pronghorns is very similar.
"[Trinidad] runs a lot of man-to-man and they pressure the ball pretty well. So, the terminology will be a little bit different, some of the structure will be a little bit different. But as far as just the type of play, I think her basketball IQ is high, I think she's got a lot of good skills and those kind of kids are going to fit in,” Rider added.
Davis is ready for the intense style of play with the Pronghorns.
“For me personally, I just feel like I'm a very aggressive, intense person just because I want to win.”
Rider says that he looks to see Davis swing from the small forward to shooting guard spots and to not be surprised if she plays a little power forward.
Davis has already become a part of the community by coaching basketball to younger girls in the city. She will have one year of eligibility with Gillette College and not sure what she wants to major in.
Rider says he is not done with bringing in players. He is looking at one or two more players with the team currently consisting of 13 teammates. If he does bring in a couple more, it will happen sooner than later. The fall semester starts on August 27th and the players will be arriving at the campus a few days earlier.
