The Gillette Roughriders will compete in Round One of the AA State Tournament, tomorrow in Cheyenne, as the fourth-seeded Riders, from the North Bracket face the number one seeded Wheatland Lobos from the South Bracket.
Gillette finished its regular season with a 29-41 record, which is not as many wins as the Riders have earned in recent seasons, but Coach Nate Perleberg says the Roughriders are confident.
“We've had kind of an up and down season as far as wins go. We like our group heading into state. We feel like we're going to play hard and we've got good enough pitching to take us down there and win some ball games,” said Perleberg.
Perleberg says the Roughriders' regular season record is not as bad as it might look.
“I think the win-loss record can be a little bit deceiving, we've played an awful tough schedule this year. Maybe a little tougher than years past,” said Perleberg. “Yeah, were used to winning 45 to 50 games, but we've lost about 15 games, this year, by two runs or less, so we've been in a lot of games. It's not like we've been overpowered by any teams.”
“We just have to fins a way at State, to win those close ones, and hopefully we've learned enough lessons along the way to go down there and win some of those,” said Perleberg.
First pitch is 4 p.m. Tomorrow afternoon.
