The Gillette Senior Babe Ruth team has won the Wyoming State Championship for the first time since 1997.
The Energy advanced to the Championship game, this weekend, after beating Buffalo, 8-7, in the semi-final. The Energy trailed 6-0, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but then rallied to score five runs in the fourth, thanks to timely hits from Jacob Groombridge, Preston Fuller, and Andrew Molder.
Lars Jones tied the game by stealing home in the fifth. Buffalo took a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh, but then, in the bottom of the seventh, the Energy had the bases loaded when Preston Fuller hit a sacrifice fly into deep left field, and Groombridge scored the winning run.
Gillette faced the heavily favored Cody Roughnecks in the Championship game. Gillette jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead, thanks to hits from Fuller, Dillon Kuhlbacher, Austin Zigray, Luke Sather, and Wyatt Sather.
Cody narrowed the score to 6-3, but Gillette was able to hang on and come away with an 8-6 win.
Groombridge pitched a complete game in the championship, allowing six hits and striking out four batters. Energy Coach Bob Zigray said his team was able to take tome the title because of solid teamwork, commitment, and love of the game from all players and coaches, which include: Coaches Jerry Fisher, Steven Zigray, Dan Bridges, Mike Leisy and JT Zigray and players Jarod Antonovich, Hayden Brown, Dale Bryant, Preston Fuller, Jacob Groombridge, Cody Johnson, Lars Jones, Dillon Kuhbacher, Kendal Mager, Daniel Merritt, Andrew Molder, Luke Sather, Wyatt Sather and Austin Zigray.
