Pronghorn women and men open season with wins

GILLETTE, Wyo.--The Gillette College Pronghorn basketball team started the 2013-14 season with victories at the South Campus Friday Night. The women defeated Northeastern Junior College 70-66. The men took care of the South Dakota Tech developmental team with a 94-50 win.

The Pronghorn women had a rough start by getting into foul trouble early. Gillette College sent the Northeastern Plainswomen to the line ten times in the first half. Northeastern took advantage of that by making 16 of the 19 attempts it had. Meg Pritchard went 11 for 12 and had 15 points at the end of the half.

The aggressive, but careless play by the Pronghorns put them down 36-29 at halftime.

Head Coach Will Rider must have had a good pep talk with the Pronghorns at halftime, as Gillette came out on a 7-0 run to tie it at 36 points apiece. After a couple lead changes, the Pronghorns got the final lead change at 44-43 and held onto it for the rest of the game.

Northeastern wouldn't go away though. The Plainswomen made another 10 of their 14 free throw attempts in the second half. However, Gillette College was able to make 16 of 24 free throws to keep it out of reach for Northeastern.

South Dakota Tech's developmental team gave the Pronghorn men a battle at the start of the game. The Hardrockers took a couple early leads in the game. It wasn't until a 21-19  score that Gillette College was able to take over the lead and game. The lack of depth, with only seven Hardrockers dressed, hurt South Dakota Tech.

Renard Suggs led the way for Gillette with 18 points. That included the 4 treys Suggs had on the night.

The men's team will have a tougher test Saturday night when they take on Eastern Wyoming College. You can hear that game following the women's game between Gillette College and Colorado Northwestern at 5:30pm. You can hear both games on 93.3 The Legend and online at
