Pronghorn women cruise by rival Sheridan College

GILLETTE, Wyo.--The rivalry between Gillette College and Sheridan College was renewed at the South Campus on Saturday night.  The Pronghorns (9-4, 1-1) got their first Region IX win on the season with a 79-49 victory over Sheridan College (9-6, 0-2).

There was a local flavor on both teams. Sierra Toms, a Campbell County High School alum, returned to Gillette for Sheridan College. The Pronghorn women have three local products-McCorra Ford, Whitney George and Bridget Cargal. This added to the blooming rivalry between the two schools.

With some early lead changes and ties in the contest, Gillette College took the final lead change at 11-10. After that point, Gillette College started to run away from the Generals. Kiela Garner and Lauren Davis led the charge for the Pronghorns in the first half, with both women scoring 11 points. Davis, who averaged 1.7 points-per-game coming into the match, sank three triples in the half to light a spark for the Pronghorns.

Gillette College had an impressive 21 boards on defense in the first half. Sheridan College only had a combined 19 rebounds in the first stanza.

The Generals shot a horrid 25 percent in total field goal attempts in the half while the Pronghorns made 43.8 percent from the floor. It was 37-20 in favor of Gillette at halftime.

In the second half, Alicia Carline took control down low. She scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half. Carline led the Pronghorns on the scoreboard, but also had a strong night with rebounds. She finished with 12 boards to finish with a double-double.

Gillette College led by as many as 34 points in the second half.

Madison Forney of Sheridan College led all players with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Toms finished with 13 points in the game.

The Pronghorn women will play in Tucson, Ariz. On Dec. 16th and 17th before heading into the holiday break.. They will face Pima Community College in their first game and Cochise College in their second match up. The Pronghorns will open up the new year, at home, against Miles Community College.
