Camel Football Tops Mustangs In OT

The Gillette High School football team improved its record to 4-0, Friday night, after a 24-23, comeback win, in overtime, at Natrona County.

The Camels trailed 17-7 to open the second half, but scored ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter, to tie the game.

Dustin Erisman carried it in, from two yards out, with just over 10 minutes remaining, to cut the Mustang lead to three.  Later in the fourth, Cale Miessler kicked a 30 yard field which wound up sending the game into overtime.

Natrona County had the first possession of the overtime period, and scored a touchdown on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Sam Turner to tight end Austin Leuers. That gave the Mustangs a 23-17 lead, but the extra point attempt was no good after a high snap threw off the rhythm of the kicker.

That gave the Camels a chance to win the game with a touchdown and a successful  extra point, and that's exactly what they got, as backup quarterback Seth Moerkerke connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass with wide receiver Cody Kelley to tie it at 23.  Miessler then successfully kicked the point-after-touchdown, which gave the Camels a one point road win against the team that defeated Gillette in last year's Class 4A State Title game.

Gillette will be home, this Friday, against Cheyenne South.  The Bison are still in search of their first win, after falling to Kelly Walsh, 19-10, on Friday.  Natrona County falls to 2-2, and they'll play at Evanston on Friday.
