Natrona County Outlasts Gillette, 14-7

The season came to an end, Friday night, for the Gillette High School football team, as the Camels were beaten 14-7 by Natrona County in the semi-final round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Both teams exchanged multiple possessions in the first half, and the game was scoreless until the final minute of the second quarter, when Mustang wideout Josh Seghetti caught a long pass from quarterback Sam Turner and raced down the right sideline for a 71-yard touchdown reception.

Natrona County held a 7-0 halftime lead, and both teams went scoreless in the third quarter. The Mustangs expanded their lead in the fourth quarter when Turner took it in from one-yard out to make it 14-0 with 10:09 remaining.

The Camels responded with a touchdown drive of their own, as they finished a long drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Fort to wideout Cody Kelley, which made it 14-7 with just over six minutes remaining.

The Camels would force the Mustangs to punt with just under two minutes remaining, and take over possession on their own eleven yard line.  Fort delivered with some long runs and clutch passes, as he led the Camels all the way down to the Mustang 13-yard line where the Camels were faced with 4th down and 8 with just over 30 seconds remaining.

Fort's pass intended for Talon Nelson, went just behind the receiver, and the Camels turned it over on downs.  All the Mustangs had to do was take a knee as the time ran out.

Gillette ends its season with an overall record of 10-1.  Natrona County advances to the Class 4A State Championship game, next Saturday, against Cheyenne East, who registered a 28-27 road win over Sheridan, Friday night.
