The Gillette Camel boys basketball team is Class 4A State Champions, afther the Camels knocked off Kelly Walsh, 56-51, in the State Championship game, Saturday night.
Gillette led by ten, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Trojans stormed back, grabbed momentum, and cut the Gillette lead to one with well over a minute left to play.
Gillette Coach Bubba Hladky called timeout, with his team up 51-50, and implemented a slow-down strategy, and the Camels ran the clock all the way down to 28 seconds left before Kelly Walsh was forced to foul.
Cody Kelley hit 4 of 5 from the free throw line, in the final 28 seconds, and Cale Miessler was 1 for 2. Kelly Walsh would score one more point, and the Camels won by five. It's their first state title since 2011.
Kelley led Gillette with 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Miessler finished with 13 points.
Eight Camel seniors end their high school basketball careers with a State Title, they are: Kelley, Seth Moerkerke, Garrett Schempp, Beau Nutting, Tanner Rogen, Tyler Fortuna, and Bryce Lyman.
